Delta County Memorial Hospital Awarded Patient Safety "A"

Delta, CO, April 29, 2016 - Delta County Memorial Hospital, a 49 bed district hospital has received its third patient safety "A" in the past four years from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national non-profit run by employers and other larger purchasers of health benefits. It is the only hospital in the region to receive a patient safety "A".

The Leapfrog Group released the spring 2016 update to the Hospital Safety Score, grading over 2,500 hospitals nationally on how well they protect their patients from errors, accidents, injuries and infections. This year's patient safety score also highlights newly-added patient measures show to have a relationship to improved patient safety outcomes. And, for the first time, the score includes two new infection measures for MRSA bacteria and C. difficile.

An analysis led by Matt Austin, Ph.D. of the Armstrong Institute of Patient Safety and Quality at John Hopkins University, found that 33,439 lives could be saved each if year if all hospitals had the same performance as those receiving an "A".

Calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group's nine-member Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital's overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries and medical and medication errors. The panel includes: John Birkmeyer (University of Michigan), Ashish Jha (Harvard University), Lucian Leape (Harvard University), Arnold Millstein (Stanford University), Peter Pronovost (John Hopkins University), Patrick Romano (university of California Davis), Sara Singer (Harvard University), Tim Vogus (Vanderbilt University) and Robert Wachter (University of California, San Francisco).
